The latest edition of the Everything's Political newsletter highlights several important stories related to politics and social issues:
โข The legacy of Black dissent: The newsletter discusses the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) and its impact on Black political participation. The recent Supreme Court's refusal to hear a case involving Black Lives Matter figure DeRay Mckesson is seen as a blow to the right to mass protest. ๐ณ๏ธ๐ค
โข The criminal trial of former President Donald Trump: The trial is seen as a watershed moment for many Black Americans who feel that Trump's actions have upended their lives. The trial will reveal a lot about the country's criminal justice system and the accountability of powerful individuals. โ๏ธ๐
โข The impact of the end of affirmative action: Duke University's decision to end its Reginaldo Howard Memorial Scholarship Program, which was created for Black applicants, is a result of the Supreme Court's decision to strike down affirmative action in higher education. This decision is seen as a threat to the campus experiences of minority students. ๐๐ซ
โข A historic voting rights settlement in Maryland: The town of Federalsburg settled a voting rights lawsuit and undertook to apologize for its history of racism. This settlement, which focused on Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, highlights the growing importance of this provision in protecting against racial vote dilution. ๐ณ๏ธโ
โข A new media venture by Black Republicans: Senator Tim Scott and four other Black Republicans have started a weekly video series called "America's Starting Five." The series aims to engage Black voters who feel they are not represented by the Democratic Party, but its success is uncertain. ๐ฅ๐
The newsletter ends by reminding readers of the importance of accessible journalism and inviting them to support Capital B's mission. ๐ฐโค๏ธ

Black voters were a key demographic in electing Joe Biden in 2020 ๐ฅ๐, but economic hardships and financial struggles have led some to question their support for the president in the 2024 election ๐๐ต. While Black voters heavily supported Biden in 2020, there is evidence that enthusiasm may be declining among this group. Former President Donald Trump is hoping to capitalize on this disillusionment, arguing that Black voters were financially better off under his administration ๐ธ๐. Frustration with the economy could lead some Black voters to turn to third-party candidates or consider not voting at all ๐ค๐ณ๏ธ. To combat this, the Biden campaign is spending millions on radio ads targeted at swing states to highlight the administration's accomplishments in areas such as investments in historically Black colleges and universities and student loan debt cancellation ๐ช๐ป. However, many Black voters are still feeling the financial pressure of high prices, expensive housing, and student debt payments ๐ฐ๐.

At least one Black woman has been selected to serve on the jury for Donald Trump's hush money trial. ๐ The unidentified juror is a young Black woman who teaches English language in a public charter school system. She has a master's degree in education and is not married or have any children. The juror stated that she tries to avoid political conversations and does not really care for the news. However, she did mention that she appreciates Trump's candor. ๐ฎ The selection of a Black woman on the jury is significant considering Trump's documented legacy of racism, particularly in his hometown of New York City where the trial is taking place. This could potentially impact the trial's outcome as Trump faces multiple criminal charges. ๐ In addition, the trial could be a dress rehearsal for Trump's other pending trials, and the role Black jurors will play is important in each case. ๐ค

Vice President Kamala Harris is facing criticism from voters who are not convinced of her qualifications or ability to step in as president if needed. ๐ A focus group of crossover voters, who voted for former President Donald Trump in 2016 and President Joe Biden in 2020, had negative assessments of Harris. Even among Black voters who were disappointed with Biden, none of them raised their hand in support of Harris. โ Additionally, a focus group of California Democrats said she needed more influence and exposure. While some attribute the criticism to racism and sexism, her low popularity could pose a problem given the focus on Biden's and Trump's ages. More than half of voters believe Harris is not qualified to serve as president. However, Harris has increased her appearances with core Democratic groups and is taking a leading role in advocating for abortion rights. ๐ฃ Many of her allies believe this will boost her popularity and the Democratic ticket. ๐

A group called Equal Ground is launching a statewide campaign in Florida to mobilize Black voters and combat what they see as extremist legislation in the state. The campaign aims to educate voters about the attacks on communities of color by the Republican-majority Florida Legislature, including censoring African-American history courses and implementing new voting laws that led to the removal of hundreds of thousands of Black voters from the rolls. ๐ก Equal Ground also wants to inform voters about upcoming ballot issues, such as protecting abortion rights and legalizing recreational marijuana. The group recently criticized Governor DeSantis for signing a bill that effectively bans civilian oversight of police departments. ๐ฎโโ๏ธ The campaign will kick off with a tour in Pinellas County on April 20 and make additional stops in Orange, Hillsborough, and Lee counties. The campaign aims to ensure that the voices of Black Floridians are heard in the 2024 elections. ๐ณ๏ธโ

Many older Black voters, like Loretta Green of Atlanta, see voting as a sacred act and feel a moral and political obligation to cast their ballot. These voters, who have lived through the Civil Rights era, have a deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by previous generations. However, there is a growing generational divide among Black voters, with younger Black voters feeling far less motivated to vote for Democrats or even vote at all. This poses a challenge for President Biden's campaign in reassembling the winning coalition from the 2020 election.
โจ Some highlights from the article include:
โข Loretta Green, an 88-year-old voter, has participated in every possible election since gaining the legal right to vote in 1960. ๐ณ๏ธ
โข Conversations with younger Black relatives illustrate the challenges Biden's campaign faces in maintaining support among Black voters. ๐ฌ
โข Younger Black voters feel less motivated to vote, citing broken campaign promises and a difficulty in communicating Biden's accomplishments. ๐
โข Black voters are a crucial constituency for Democrats, and a drop-off in support could affect Biden's chances of winning re-election. ๐
โข There is a striking generational divide among Black voters, with older voters more committed to voting and younger voters feeling less motivated. โณ
โข The article suggests that younger Black voters may not appreciate or fully understand the struggles and sacrifices of the Civil Rights movement. ๐โ
![](https://blackpressusa.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Ron-Reynolds-Why-MAGA-Policies-Are-Detrimental-to-Black-Communities-web.jpg)
The op-ed article argues that Make America Great Again (MAGA) policies are detrimental to Black communities in the United States. The author highlights several key points to support this argument, including:
โข MAGA proponents use baseless claims of voter fraud to justify voter suppression tactics that disproportionately target Black voters, such as restrictive voter ID laws and purging voter rolls. โ๐ณ๏ธ
โข The attacks on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) threaten to strip millions of Americans, particularly those in underserved communities, of access to affordable healthcare. This would be especially disastrous for Black Americans who already face disparities in healthcare access and outcomes. ๐ฅ๐ท
โข MAGA policies, such as tax cuts and deregulation, exacerbate disparities in economic opportunity, leading to disproportionately high rates of unemployment, poverty, and wage stagnation for Black Americans. ๐ผ๐ฐ
โข The underlying idea of MAGA, that America was somehow greater in the past, ignores the struggles and sacrifices of past generations who fought for civil rights and equality. โ๐
The author concludes by urging fellow Black Americans to reject the empty promises of MAGA and work towards a future where all citizens can thrive. ๐ค๐ช

Black Chicago voters expressed their anger at Mayor Brandon Johnson's request for an additional $70 million in taxpayer funds to be spent on addressing the city's migrant crisis. The progressive mayor, who has defended the city's sanctuary policies, wants the funds to be approved by the City Council despite already spending $300 million on housing, food, and healthcare for migrants. ๐ก During a City Council meeting, Black voters criticized the mayor, calling for the funds to be allocated to their own neighborhoods instead. One woman warned that if the aldermen voted in favor of the funds, the voters would oust them from office. Critics argue that the mayor's handling of the migrant crisis and rising crime rates has led to a push for his recall. A petition drive is currently underway to gather signatures for a ballot referendum to change state law and allow for the recall of the mayor. ๐ฅ๐
As we close this chapter, let's remember that our right to vote is both a privilege and a responsibility. Let's honor the resilience of our ancestors by participating in the electoral process and demanding the change they envisioned. Together, we can build a future worthy of their sacrifices.
