DID YOU KNOWโ€ฆ.!?Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Black Americans have been disproportionately affected, with higher infection rates, hospitalizations, and mortality rates compared to other racial groups. Let's examine the underlying health disparities exacerbating this crisis and advocate for targeted interventions.

New York Attorney General Letitia James has fined conservative activists Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman $1 million for using robocalls to intimidate Black voters in the 2020 election. The calls, made under the name Project 1599, spread misinformation about mail-in voting, suggesting that personal information would be used by police and credit card companies, as well as falsely claiming that the CDC would use the data to track individuals for mandatory vaccinations. The attorney general's office cited one recipient of the robocall who experienced severe anxiety and ultimately withdrew their voter registration due to the disinformation. Burkman and Wohl were also fined $5 million by the Federal Communications Commission for their robocalls. They are believed to have called 85,000 people throughout the United States. ๐Ÿ’ฐโœ‰๏ธ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿคฅ๐Ÿ‘ฅ๐Ÿ—ฝ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ๐Ÿ”โœ‰๏ธ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿคฅ๐ŸŽฏ๐Ÿ’ฐ

๐Ÿ—ž๏ธ The 2024 presidential race is ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ and voters are broadly critical of both Joe Biden and Donald Trump. According to a new Pew Research Center survey, here are some key findings:

โ€ข The race is currently tied, with 49% of registered voters favoring Trump and 48% favoring Biden. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
โ€ข Both candidates are viewed unfavorably across a range of key traits, including fitness for office, personal ethics, and respect for democratic values. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ˜’๐Ÿ’”
โ€ข Trump has an advantage in terms of fitness for office, with more voters expressing confidence in his physical and mental fitness compared to Biden. ๐Ÿ’ชโœจ
โ€ข Biden has an advantage in terms of acting ethically in office and respecting democratic values. ๐Ÿค๐ŸŒ
โ€ข There are large divides in voter preferences based on age, education, and race and ethnicity. Younger voters and those with a four-year college degree are more likely to favor Biden, while older voters and those with no college degree favor Trump. ๐ŸŽ“๐ŸŒŸ
โ€ข A majority of voters say it is important for the losing candidate in November to publicly acknowledge the winner as the legitimate president, but Trump's supporters are less likely to say this is very important. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’”
โ€ข Nearly half of registered voters say they would replace both Biden and Trump on the 2024 ballot if given the chance, with Biden's supporters more likely to express this view. ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ”„
โ€ข Biden's approval rating is 35%, while Trump's approval rating among the general public is not mentioned in the article. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘Ž

Overall, with voters broadly critical of both candidates, the 2024 presidential race promises to be a tight and contentious one. ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

According to a recent poll from the Pew Research Center, support for the Republican Party among Black voters appears to be softening. Pastor Dr. Darrell Scott, a prominent Trump supporter and advisor, issued a warning to the MAGA movement about this potential decline in support. The poll showed that 83% of Black voters align with the Democratic Party, with only 12% supporting the Republican Party. ๐Ÿ˜• While this may seem low, it is still an increase from Trump's 8% support among Black voters in the 2020 election. Some reasons for this shift in support include concerns about the prices of basic necessities, such as food, under a Democratic administration, as well as backlash against police accountability measures. While some Black voters may see Joe Biden as the lesser of two evils, there is not a lot of excitement for his re-election, and many may choose to stay home unless there are positive changes in economic prospects or civil rights. โœจ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ“Š Former President Donald Trump maintains a narrow lead over incumbent President Joe Biden in the polls for the 2024 US election. Trump's advantage in several swing states ๐ŸŽฏ could work in his favor as he aims to become the first person to return to the White House after an absence since the 19th century. However, Trump must first win over moderate Republicans who voted against him in the primaries.

๐Ÿ”‘ The key issues in the election include immigration ๐Ÿž๏ธ, concerns about democracy ๐Ÿ—ฝ, and inflation ๐Ÿ’ธ. Biden's approval ratings have been declining ๐Ÿ˜ž, with many voters believing he is too old to serve another term. Meanwhile, Trump's poll ratings remain steady ๐Ÿ’ช despite facing criminal indictments.

๐ŸŒŸ Swing states, such as Georgia ๐Ÿ‘, Florida ๐ŸŒด, Michigan ๐Ÿญ, Arizona ๐ŸŒต, Pennsylvania ๐Ÿฆ…, and North Carolina ๐ŸŒ…, will play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the election. These states have historically been battlegrounds, where voters swing between parties. The race is on! ๐Ÿ

Black Philadelphians view voting as more than just their civic duty; it's a continuation of the fight for equality that their ancestors faced. Voting is seen as a way to honor the voting battles of previous generations and to ensure that progress continues to be made. Some highlights from the article include:

โ€ข ๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš–๏ธ Black men gained the right to vote with the passage of the Fifteenth Amendment in 1870, while Black women had to wait until 1920.
โ€ข ๐Ÿšซ Discriminatory practices such as poll taxes, literacy tests, and intimidation tactics were used to prevent African Americans from voting.
โ€ข ๐ŸŒ The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement fought for Black voting rights, leading to the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965.
โ€ข ๐Ÿ’ช Voting has allowed Black families to gain access to education and economic opportunities.
โ€ข ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ Black voters in Pennsylvania play a crucial role in determining election outcomes and are being targeted for registration efforts by local politicians and the Biden-Harris campaign.

For many Black Philadelphians, voting is seen as a way to prevent history from repeating itself and to ensure that their voices are heard. It is not just a civic duty, but a personal and deeply important act of resistance and empowerment.

In this engaging article, A. Peter Bailey emphasizes the critical importance of Black unity in addressing current threats faced by the Black community. Bailey highlights three columns from The Washington Informer that shed light on the urgent need for Black unity. ๐Ÿ’ช

โ€ข The first column by Marc H. Morial discusses how discriminatory laws have made it harder for eligible Black voters to exercise their constitutional right to vote. At least twenty-nine states have passed laws that restrict voting access since 2020. โš–๏ธ

โ€ข The second column, attributed to the National Association of Black Women in Construction, highlights the continuous discrimination against Black American contractors in federal contracting. ๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšง

โ€ข The third column by David W. Marshall explores the battle over Social Security and how it disproportionately affects people of color who are less likely to have pensions or retirement savings. ๐Ÿ’ฐ

Bailey argues that a unified Black community would be better equipped to protect themselves from the actions of hostile or paternalistic white individuals. He emphasizes that Black unity is not an option but an absolute necessity to safeguard the community's interests in health, economics, culture, politics, education, and technology. โœŠ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ”’

Donald Trump has secured the necessary delegates to win the Republican presidential nomination for a third consecutive election ๐Ÿ˜Ž, but who will be his running mate for the 2024 race remains to be seen ๐Ÿค”. Speculation is high about whether Trump will choose a woman or person of color in an effort to broaden his appeal ๐ŸŒ. Some of the top contenders for the position include Greg Abbott, Tucker Carlson, Ron DeSantis, Ben Carson, and Tulsi Gabbard ๐Ÿ‘ฅ. Trump may look for a running mate who is loyal, looks the part, and will not outshine him on the campaign trail ๐Ÿ‘€. While the VP pick may generate significant press coverage, it is unlikely to have a substantial impact on the election outcome ๐Ÿ“ฐ. Fifteen former vice presidents have gone on to become presidents, and the choice of a running mate can make or break a campaign ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

๐Ÿ“ข Dr. Cornel West, a philosopher and former Princeton professor, has made history โœจ by announcing an all-Black presidential ticket for the 2024 election. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Dr. West's running mate is Dr. Melina Abdullah, a distinguished scholar in Pan-African studies and one of the co-founders of the Black Lives Matter movement. This announcement comes at a pivotal moment in American politics, as tensions and activism on college campuses continue to rise. โœŠ๐Ÿฟ Dr. West and Dr. Abdullah's alliance represents a departure from conventional politics, with a platform focused on racial justice, economic equity, and transformative social change. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฟ Their goal is to create a more equitable future for America, grounded in principles of justice and love. โค๏ธ๐ŸŒ This historic candidacy is significant in the face of America's complex history of race and politics, as it marks the first time an all-Black presidential ticket has been seen in the country. ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฟ With their commitment to justice and their vision for a more perfect union, Dr. West and Dr. Abdullah aim to lead America into a new era of hope and progress. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฟ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿšฌ The Biden administration's delay in finalizing a ban on menthol cigarettes can be attributed to decades of resistance, delays, and industry lobbying. The proposal to ban menthol cigarettes has been contemplated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 2013 but concerns over increased policing of menthol smokers and the potential for a new illicit market have hindered progress. Additionally, the popularity of menthols, particularly among Black smokers, has made the issue politically sensitive. Former FDA Center for Tobacco Products Director, Mitch Zeller, believes that politics may be the only reason for the delay. ๐Ÿ˜• The delay has frustrated advocates who fear that the longer the proposal is put on hold, the worse the political ramifications may become. ๐Ÿค The divide on the issue also exists among civil rights and Black interest groups and lawmakers. Despite calls for the ban, there is skepticism about the impact it will have on swing voters and potential nonvoters. The FDA has not yet commented on the rule.

โ˜‘๏ธ The demand for reparations for slavery and the modern legacy of structural racism is gaining momentum among black communities globally. Black Lives Matter protests following the murder of George Floyd have energized these calls for justice. However, politicians have dismissed and ignored these demands, showing a disconnect from reality.
๐Ÿ’ฐ Western nations built on slavery actively avoid addressing the issue of reparations. In the US, the HR40 bill, which suggests studying reparations, has been stalled for decades. The UK, the leading slave trading nation, fails to acknowledge its true role in slavery.
โœŠ Despite the lack of political will in these countries, nations scarred by slavery are uniting to fight for justice. The proposal for an international tribunal on reparations, similar to the Nuremberg Trials, is gaining support. Reparations can help tackle economic disparities and intergenerational trauma caused by slavery.
๐ŸŒ Black communities around the world demand reparations as a debt that must be paid for meaningful progress to be made.

Black celebrities are causing a stir in the 2024 presidential election ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ! From urban radio personality Charlamagne Tha God to sports journalist Stephen A. Smith, influential Black influencers are making headlines with their opinions on the candidates and political issues. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿ”น Stephen A. Smith faced criticism for appearing to defend Donald Trump's remarks about Black people finding him relatable due to his criminal trial ๐Ÿค”.
๐Ÿ”น Charlamagne Tha God received backlash for calling President Biden a "sh***y elected official" and has faced criticism for his political commentary ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ.

Political strategist Reecie Colbert argued that while celebrities have influence, they may lack the necessary political expertise to make authoritative statements ๐ŸŽค. However, Colbert also noted that celebrities can be vulnerable to disinformation and right-wing talking points, which can be profitable. ๐Ÿ’ฐ

Cameron Trimble, CEO of Hip-Politics, emphasized that celebrities and media personalities now have the power to shape narratives through traditional news and social media. He suggested that the Biden-Harris campaign engage with influential voices to address any misinformation or misleading assertions ๐Ÿ“ข.

In this high-stakes election, the influence of Black celebrities presents both challenges and opportunities for the candidates and their campaigns ๐ŸŒ.

President Joe Biden addressed the National Action Network to appeal to Black voters and tout his record of fulfilling promises. ๐Ÿ‘ In a video speech from the White House, Biden highlighted several key achievements, including police reform, student debt relief, and the promotion of gun control. ๐Ÿš”๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ”ซ He also discussed his commitment to building Black wealth, protecting voting rights, and supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ๐ŸŽ“ Biden criticized Republican and conservative assaults on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, emphasizing the importance of combating voter suppression and erasing the progress made in civil rights. ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ๐Ÿ“š He praised the National Action Network as the nation's most important civil rights organization and acknowledged the work that still needs to be done. Network President Al Sharpton commended Biden for his honesty and called for concrete actions rather than empty promises. ๐Ÿ›๏ธ๐Ÿค Former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee challenging Biden in November, recently introduced a line of Trump athletic shoes. ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ The four-day convention concludes with a session on criminal justice reform featuring Yusef Salaam, one of the Central Park Five teens who was exonerated. โš–๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ฅ๐Ÿ—ฝ

As this newsletter comes to a close, let's remember the resilience of our ancestors who endured unimaginable hardships to pave the way for us. Let's honor their legacy by actively participating in the electoral process and advocating for the change they envisioned. Together, let's build a future rooted in justice and equality.
