The late Congressman John Lewis is being praised for his unwavering commitment to nonviolence as the US faces a myriad of violent threats. Lewis believed in the concept of a "beloved community"—a democratic society built on radical equality and inclusion.
For Lewis, nonviolence was not just a strategy, but the embodiment of God's love. Throughout his life, Lewis demonstrated his belief in nonviolence through his participation in civil rights sit-ins, including his leadership role in the famous Selma to Montgomery march in 1965.
In his own words, he described nonviolence as "one of the most powerful weapons that we have in the arsenal of nonviolent action." As the United States grapples with threats of violence and hate groups, Lewis's message of nonviolence serves as a reminder that peaceful change is possible.

In a recent interview on Philadelphia's WURD black radio station, President Biden made another gaffe by describing himself as the "first black woman to serve with a black president." The 81-year-old president struggled to find the right words while discussing his time as former President Barack Obama's vice president and his choice of Kamala Harris as his own vice president.
This slip-up comes as Biden faces mounting concerns over his age and fitness to lead, particularly following his disastrous debate performance against former President Trump last week. During the interview, Biden also made other mistakes, such as claiming to be the first president elected statewide in Delaware when he was a kid and saying that he understands the black struggle for representation because he didn't think Catholics could be president until John F.
Kennedy's election over six decades ago. Critics are highlighting these errors, while Biden's re-election campaign spokesperson defends him, arguing that the president's speech pattern is normal for him.

In a fiery segment on her show, "The ReidOut," MSNBC host Joy Reid criticized Kevin Roberts, the president of the far-right organization The Heritage Foundation, for his remarks about a potential "second American Revolution." Roberts made the comments on Steve Bannon's "War Room" podcast, stating that they were in the process of taking the country back and that the revolution would remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.
Reid called Roberts a coward and accused him of issuing a violent threat against Americans. She also expressed concern about the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025, a nationalist initiative supported by over 100 right-wing think tanks and groups.
The project aims to overhaul the federal government and implement conservative policies, and Reid warned against the potential damage it could cause if Donald Trump is re-elected. Many Democrats, including Marianne Williamson and President Joe Biden's campaign spokesperson, criticized Roberts' remarks and expressed concern about the potential violence and threat to American ideals.

Jesse Owens' achievements at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, where he won four gold medals, were a direct challenge to Adolf Hitler's racist ideology, according to Owens' grandson. Hitler had hoped the Olympics would showcase the supposed superiority of white, Aryan athletes, while openly degrading black American participants.
Despite this, Owens' success on the track and field events made him a legend in the sport. Owens' grandson, Stuart Owen Rankin, describes his grandfather's actions as a "thumb in the eye" to Hitler.
Owens' legacy continues to be admired and celebrated, as his accomplishments serve as a reminder of the enduring fight against racism. Owens' friendship with German long jumper Luz Long also defied expectations, given the racial tensions of the time.
This bond between two world-class athletes from different backgrounds serves as a testament to the power of friendship and unity.

The US presidential election is being closely watched by Africans, who are concerned about the political divide in the country and how it will impact them. Many Africans are puzzled by the conflict in a country that has so much wealth and power, and wonder why Americans can't find a way to enjoy their lives and be grateful for their blessings.
Tanzanians, in particular, emphasize the importance of unity and living in harmony with nature and each other. They worry that the division in the US will affect their own economy and way of life.
Africans are keenly aware of the influence the US has on the rest of the world, and they hope for a more stable and peaceful political environment in the US.

Kamala Harris, the Vice President of the United States, could bring a different approach to the White House if she were to become President. Harris has had a significant role on the national stage since 2021, but her policy positions are relatively untested.
Her political history as a prosecutor and senator suggests she may take a different path to Joe Biden. While she has faced criticism for her tough record as California's attorney general, she has also voiced support for widespread police reform, new protections for gay rights, and the federal legalization of marijuana.
Additionally, Harris has shown a willingness to fight Republicans on the ethics of immigration policy. Her presidency could also focus more on technology policy, as she has already tackled the issue of internet user protection and sex trafficking online.
Overall, Harris's unique background and policy positions suggest that she could bring a different style of leadership to the White House.

In this article, the author discusses the perversion of the word "freedom" in today's society. They argue that although America claims to be a free country, there are still many injustices and inequalities that exist.
For example, women are not truly free when it comes to body sovereignty and equal pay, and poverty persists among black communities. The author also highlights the hypocrisy of the conservative majority in the Supreme Court, who claim to be originalists when it comes to the Constitution but create laws that contradict their own founders' words.
They also shed light on the struggles faced by children in America, including homelessness and food insecurity. Despite all of this, the author finds solace in quotes from influential figures such as Toni Morrison, Ida B.
Wells, and Malcolm X, which remind them of the true meaning of freedom and inspire them to keep fighting.

In a video captured on a golf course, former President Donald Trump unleashed an expletive-laden rant against his political rivals, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Trump referred to Biden as a "broken-down pile of c--p" and predicted that the vice-president would quit the race for the White House.
The video, which Trump shared on his social media platform Truth Social, showed him sitting in a golf cart with his son Barron. After the video's release, Democrats criticized Trump's use of profanity and labeled it a "new rock bottom" for him.
Republicans, on the other hand, launched attack ads against Harris, with one advertisement urging people to "Stop Kamala." This video comes amid rumors that Harris could replace Biden as the Democrats' nominee.
Mark Robinson, the leading Republican candidate for governor of North Carolina, has come under fire for a series of Facebook posts in which he criticized Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement.
In the posts, which were made on MLK Day and found during a review by HuffPost, Robinson referred to King as an "ersatz pastor" and a "communist." He also downplayed slavery, rejected the idea that he is part of the African American community, and attacked the late congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis.
Robinson's posts have surfaced at a time when he has been trying to soften his rhetoric and celebrate King and the civil rights movement. Former President Donald Trump recently praised Robinson as "better than Dr.
Martin Luther King," but his social media posts suggest a different attitude towards King and the civil rights movement.

In a recent interview with Philadelphia's Wurd radio station, President Joe Biden made a verbal gaffe when he referred to himself as the "first black woman" to serve in the White House. Biden was attempting to highlight his role as the first vice-president to serve alongside a black president, Barack Obama.
However, he ended up mixing up his own identity with that of his vice-president, Kamala Harris. Both Obama and Harris made history when elected, with Obama becoming the first black president and Harris becoming the first black vice-president and first woman to hold the position.
This is the latest in a series of verbal gaffes by Biden, including stumbling during his debate with Donald Trump and referring to Trump as "one of our colleagues" in a recent speech. The mistakes have raised concerns about Biden's mental acuity and ability to serve as president.

In his 2024 presidential campaign, Donald Trump is making efforts to reach out to black rappers for support. Trump had previously garnered support from black rappers, winning 8% of black voters in the 2016 election and 12% in 2020.
His support among black rappers appears to be growing, with young black voters showing more openness to him due to factors such as COVID-19 stimulus checks and criminal pardons. Trump does not need a substantial number of black votes to win, but peeling away a small percentage can make a significant difference in the election outcome.
By capitalizing on his celebrity status, Trump can shape his populist political persona to resonate with people who are tired of the political establishment and unhappy with the current system. Trump has reached out to rappers like Lil Wayne, Kodak Black, Sada Baby, Sheff G, Sleepy Hallow, and Kanye West.
However, it is important to remember the critical issues of police brutality and accountability that affect the black community.

The first Black Navy SEAL, William Goines, is being remembered and honored in Virginia after his death in June at the age of 88. Goines was one of the first 40 people chosen to be a SEAL when the first two teams were created and made history as the first Black Navy SEAL when he joined SEAL Team 2 at Little Creek in Virginia Beach.
Goines is highly respected in the SEAL community for breaking the color barrier and paving the way for others. In addition to his service as a SEAL, Goines also started an underwater demolition team in Norfolk.
A book about Goines is currently being written by Suffolk author and teacher Rodney Walker, who has been researching Goines' life and career for over three years. Despite the accolades and recognition, Goines will always be remembered by his family as "Uncle Bill.

A new report from the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has revealed a 12% surge in homelessness since 2022. The report highlighted the disproportionate impact on Black and Latino communities, with nearly 4 in 10 homeless individuals identifying as Black and almost one-third identifying as Hispanic or Latino.
Despite comprising just 13% of the total U.S.
population, Black individuals accounted for 37% of the homeless population. The report pointed to the expiration of resources from President Biden's American Rescue Plan as a contributing factor to the rise in homelessness.
While HUD has projected to serve 330,000 people through increased grants to homeless service organizations, challenges persist in combatting homelessness. The report emphasized the need for sustained, collaborative efforts to support vulnerable populations nationwide.

Rocky Jones, the owner of Rocky's Barbershop in Atlanta, Georgia, allowed the group 'Blacks for Trump' to use his business for a campaign event, but he is now experiencing a negative impact on his business as a result. Jones claims that he was misled and blindsided when Donald Trump called into the event while filming was taking place to promote the GOP nominee ahead of the presidential debate.
Since the event, Jones has received backlash and angry phone calls, leading to a decrease in customers. The Trump team has produced a contract to prove that Jones willingly agreed to host the event, while some in the Black community argue that Jones should have known better.
Overall, Jones is facing the consequences of his decision to host the event and is now dealing with the repercussions on his business.
